Yum

by bluemorning74

I'm glad I didn't read these reviews before going!! All 3 of us had great food. I'm not familiar with authentic Cuban food, but we all enjoyed our food, flavoring was wonderful.

  • Pros: Nice size of portion
  • Cons: a bit noisy- although the place was packed

Inferior food, insulting manager

by OriginalTampan

When Carmine's was a tiny place on the corner in Ybor City, my wife and I used to go there for the great food and friendly atmosphere. A lemonade was squeezed by hand. Today, Carmine's has become a tourist trap, expanded in size and diminished in service. It is now cash only and after our experience today, it is easy to see why. As someone who was born in Tampa, not only is the "Cuban" food inauthentic, it is frankly awful. While the waiter was efficient and friendly, the "Cuban sandwiches" inferior to a convenience store, and after my wife ordered a lasagna and received something akin to lasagna soup, boiling at the edges and lukewarm inside, she found it inedible. The waiter mentioned something about "problems in the kitchen," and my "palomilla steak" which seemed to have been harvested from a very old yak, was seasoned in a way that was totally unfamiliar to anyone acquainted with authentic Tampa cuisine. I was lucky, though, in that my food came within 30 minutes of ordering it. After the waiter asked about my wife's virtually untouched lasagna and offered to see if it could be taken off the bill, a female manager approached, and as my wife was bent over attending our son, loomed over her menacingly and wagged a finger at her, saying she'd "stuck a finger in" the lasagna, and there wasn't anything wrong with it. Now I can deal with lousy food, and I can deal with waiting too long for the lousy food, but this manager insulted my wife, basically calling her a liar, and the sad thing is that we frequented Carmine's before it was a successful tourist trap, and it's a pity to see how far it's fallen. We'll never go again, and as someone born in Tampa, and someone who knows where to direct every client of my business as well as friends and family, I will warn everyone off this restaurant that was once a great place and is now an absolute, and inauthentic, disgrace. As my brother in law said, "Carmine's: Cash only and the customer is always wrong." Very sad.

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Hostile managers, Chef Boyardee lasagna, convenience store Cuban sandwiches

Worst Cuban sandwich in the city

by jonknee

I went to Carmine's for lunch today and had quite possibly the worst Cuban sandwich of my life. I didn't think you could get a bad one in Ybor (it's the birthplace of the damn thing), but wow. I sent it back before even trying it because the "pressed Cuban" was cold. A few bites into the barely warm version and I was done. It wouldn't have passed muster at a quickie mart, let alone a sit down restaurant.

I complained to the manager and he was only willing to make another sandwich, not comp it. The last thing I wanted was more food from Carmine's.

Fail.

  • Pros: Good location, large bar
  • Cons: Terrible service and inedible Cuban sandwich

It's a strange, dark restaurant but it's fun. The food is good and cheap. Great place to go with pals.

  • Pros: inexpensive

Tampa Native

This place is overrated. They are many better options for food, drinks, and entertainment in the Ybor City area.

This local favorite in the Latin Quarter offers a historical setting, a casual place to people-watch and tasty cuisine.

In Short
With a worn black floor, pictures of Marilyn Monroe and photos of 1950s sports teams on the walls, Carmine's exudes history. Old-timers go for the food, newer devotees come to talk and watch the crowds roll by through the big plate-glass windows. Located in a historic Ybor brick building, it still has its original tin ceiling. Salads, pasta and hamburgers are available, but the best dishes have that Latin flavor so beloved in Tampa.

plenty of other places to go

by sdluke

We've tried Carmine's three times and will not be back. The service was very lacking, when we mentioned this to the manager we were told, "Sorry, we're very busy". The third (and last) time we left after waiting over 30 minutes for our food. The previous two times the food was average.

  • Cons: service, food
