Editorial Review for Pelagia Trattoria – by Laura Reily

The Scene
The Renaissance Tampa International Plaza's 152-seat ground-floor restaurant is dazzlingly delicious eye-candy--the decor, the staff and diverse clientele. Hand-glazed tiles, custom ironwork and bright, jewel-colored blown-glass pendant lamps lend a sophisticated Mediterranean ambience to the soaring space, with a luxuriant, open-air courtyard and a demonstration kitchen to add drama.

The Food
The bold Mediterranean palate in the dining room is echoed in Chef Fabrizio Schenardi's lush cuisine. At breakfast, this means lemon souffle pancakes; at lunch, crunchy fried olives stuffed with three meats or sultry pinot grigio-braised mussels; and for dinner, the stylish crowd raves about the cinnamon- and juniper berry-marinated quail and pistachio-crusted rack of lamb with fig-merlot sauce.

We had friends staying at the Tampa Renaissance and met up with them for dinner at the restaurant. My initial thought was that the restaurant was going to be your typical hotel restaurant w/ what I refer to as "generic" food. Well, I now want to assure you that this is NOT YOUR TYPICAL HOTEL RESTAURANT. The food was absolutely fantastic! The restaurant has a Mediterranean/Italian flare. I have been to Italy where I came to realize that authentic Italian food and American Italian food are actually a bit different. This restaurant has authentic Italian food - their tiramasu was to die for, it actually came in a bowl and had more of a custard consistancy- as it had in Italy. We had their shrimp appetizer as well as some type of tomoto mozzerella baguette - both delicious. I was extremely impressed with this restaurant and only hope that others will look past that fact that it's associated with a hotel and realize how great their food actually is.

Pros: Fantastic Authentic Italian Food

Great Food! We loved this restaurant the shrimp appitizer was wonderful! We found this restaurant on Zagat which is our restaurant bible and sure enough they were right on about the food and service. The design of the restaurant was very contemporary and I just wonder were they found the very cool lighting fixtures.

Pros: Service, Food and Value
