Tampa >Udipi Cafe
Great food and great service!. After reading other reviews on Udipi, I feel I must comment. I have been a steady customer there for the last six months and have found the family to be extremely friendly and the food to be consistently delicious. I have had no experience of rudeness or mixed up orders. I look forward to continuing to eat there every week! Udipi is the best Indian food in Tampa!
Best South Indian food.
Awesome Food!! Very authentic south Indian food.Decent service!!Good ambience.
Had to travel to Tampa,Florida.Had food there plenty of times..
Great lunch buffet. I have had lunch twice this summer (2008) & was more than pleased on both occasions. The decor/atmosphere is clean but average. We selected the buffet, so service was hardly an issue. We were seated, given water, & had our used dishes removed promptly & politely. There was an ample selection on the buffet, all labeled, & none of the dishes suffered for being in the chafing dishes. The food was hot, the sauces were not dried out or lumpy, & the rice & bread were appetizingly fresh. There are also chilled chutneys, fruits, & salads. I particularly like the large stainless steel platters which you may use to bring your selections to your table. They look like they were designed to serve "pu pu" platters & have dividing walls to keep the various sauces from getting all muddled together. This makes tasting each separate dish a joyful adventure. The worst problem is trying to remember which dishes I didn't taste on my first trip and/or which ones I especially wanted seconds. In addition to the items on the buffet table, the meal also includes a large (10 inch diameter?) "pancake" stuffed with curried potatoes which is cooked fresh & brought to the table once you have selected the buffet. I have eaten Indian food in other restaurants in Tampa as well as Gainesville, Ft. Myers, Baltimore, & there is even an Indian/Pakistani restaurant in Lakeland. Though I can't attest to the authenticity of Indian cuisine, Udipi's offerings are as delicious as any I've had elsewhere. I highly recommend the lunch buffet here, especially if you want to become familiar with a range of Indian dishes. The food is all vegetarian, but don't let that keep you away. This is not your twigs & roots vegetarian fare. To me the dishes are all perfectly seasoned - some are spicy-hot, others tend towards the turmeric & cumin end of the curry spectrum, still others (I guess) have a masala flavor. The point is, the variety of flavors makes for a savory, mouth-wateringly-delicious lunch.
Best South India food in Tampa. I've been to all the Indian Restaurants in the bay area and I can say with certainty that this is best restaurant in town to get authentic South Indian food. The restaurant maybe a bit small and the decor just average, but the food is great. I recommend the Masala Dosa. The North Indian dishes aren't bad either. Its frequented mostly by Indians (especially South Indians) so you know the food has to be good. I have no complaints about the service.
I have been to the restaurant many times. Every time there will be an issue with the customers and the serving staff. I myself had couple of tiffs with them. This restaurant is unfit to be in America. The staff definitely need training in customer service.
Couple of weeks back I was having food with my family there , as we were finishing our food, across our table a lady who has come with her kid and husband was being given a hard time by the waiter. She had ordered a rava dosai and looks like specifically told the waiter to bring it without onions, after waiting for her order for a quiet a bit of time she recieved her order with onions.
The waiter basically argued with her that she ordered the as he brought it and refuised to take it back. Finally the manager had to come and pacify the customer.
A year back we met one of our friend at the Tampa temple and while talking , he said he is going to the hospital for stomach ailment and allergies. When asked why so, he replied that some months back he went to Tampa Udipi with his parents from India and had moth insect in his sambar and from that time onwards he was suffering with illness.
The waiters here are are argumentative, in sensitive to customer needs and have lots of attitude. better to order take away that eating inside.
Food Culture. I'm writing this review mostly because of the previous review in the strand. We have been loyal customers of Udipi for years, and it will probably be the thing I miss most if and when I leave Tampa (without a doubt if you are speaking about food!). One thing that annoys me about people in this country patronizing ethnic restaurants, is that not only are you eating ethnic food but in most cases you are being serviced by people of another culture. When we first visited Udipi, we found the servers to be non-talkative and reserved, and we could have construed this as rude or impolite. The opposite, however, is true. They are more shy and retiring than most American servers, but they are not impolite or unfriendly. Once we got to know each other they opened up and have become very friendly and always very polite. They treat us as family when we walk in, and the food is always scrumptious. One more thing, and in reply to an earlier review, they never state that they are "Vegan", and I'm not sure they even know what that word means. I have asked them in the past whether certain dishes contain any ingredients from milk/cheese sources, and they knew right away what I meant. In conclusion, I recommend on your first visit trying the lunch buffet, they have a great selection of their dishes and it gives you the opportunity to find the dishes you like (I haven't found one I didn't like). As for customer service, try a little patience and go out of your way to help bridge the culture and language barrier, it will pay off!
One of worst customer services. I have gone there number of times since last couple of years, every time I go there, I get pretty bad experiences with their customer services. I think, they should attend some course on customer services. Food is not that great either but we go there just to have some south indian food for the sake of it. I do not recommend to any of my friends.
Outstanding vegitarian food. I was never a great fan of Indian food. The places I had been had overspiced, not enough variety, and had always seemed like thedishes blended into each other. I was so pleasantly suprised, that Udipi has become an alltime favorite. Being a vegitarian and have an extensive selection is a dream come true. The food is always very fresh, the service is outstanding, and I always feel welcomed each and every time. The pricing is beyond belief. I will always give up my manditory glass of wine with dinner to have a friendly atmosphere, with great service and outstanding food!!!
The pillowy breads, lentil dumplings and stuffed crepes make the perfect introduction to vibrant south Indian vegetarian cuisine..
A noisy, family-friendly setting make this lesser-known cuisine seem both comforting and exotic. Rookies should go for masala dosa, a huge, thin rice and lentil pancake rolled into a tube--it looks like a sleeping bag on a platter--served with chili-spiked coconut chutney and tomato-y sambar. Or opt for uthapam, a soft pancake filled with ingredients like tomatoes, peas, cilantro and onion. Eaten in triangular wedges dotted with sauce, it's an Indian spin on pizza.
