Best Ribs in St.Pete. Yummmmmy....delish, meaty ribs with 3 different BBQ sauces to chose from. I love this place and go once a week. Wait staff is great: friendly and accommodating. Try it. You won't be disappointed!!
Hard to criticize!.
My wife and I headed to Rib City Grill the night before Valentine's Day (her V-day gift to me) as I said "you know what sounds good right now? Barbecue!"
After calling barbecue places around St Pete to no avail (it was 8PM on a Saturday...why do these restaurants all close so darn early?), I decided we'd do Rib City.
I was reluctant to go because I recall I had been to this very location probably 4-5 years ago, and don't recall being blown away. Barbecue typically isn't cheap, I'm into good value and so when I go I want it to be non-disappointing.
In any event, we hit up Rib City and I must say - after having come back from what CitySearch said was "very good" (not the best, but high up there) barbecue in Alabama, I was pleased with the Rib City style.
We both got the Tony's Special (on special that night, $1 off). It is a full rack of baby back ribs with your choice of chicken, turkey, beef or pork.
First, the ribs are really good. Hard to criticize: not greasy, so you don't get that grease-overload that usually let's me eat only maybe three ribs before my body goes "UGH! ENOUGH!"
They are lightly sauced, and the sauce has been cooked on for a few seconds/mins I am sure, so it's not wet on there. This is great because Rib City offers three (or four, if you ask for the "Hot" bbq sauce - which is excellent) very different, very good sauces.
The ribs had just a perfect mix of greaselessness with light char - without an over-charred, over-smokey flavor - and ample meat.
The turkey was outstanding. It reminds me of Paul Prudhomme's description of cajun food: "looks like hell, tastes like heaven," except in the case of Rib City turkey it is "looks like lunchmeat, tastes like heaven." It is everything good about turkey with none of the downsides. The best turkey I've ever had. It is "dry" and almost "crumbles," which is a GOOD thing...it's just one of those "you have to try it to get it" things. It's not "juicy" with strange meat flavors like other smoked turkey meat I have had.
The sides were a mixed bag. The herbed texas toast had real herbs on it - good stuff....but I dunno, it just didn't do it for me. Did not taste like margarine-bread, I will give it that. Maybe if they made it with slightly thicker bread and slightly less butter! Go figure, I'd as for less of what makes Texas toast so tasty...
The beans were the only real weak spot - a flavorful but thin "sauce" and a taste like cooked beans that nevertheless hadn't been fully soaked overnight (aka every so slightly somewhat firm/dry) made them less than amazing.
Cole slaw was solid, nothing to complain about.
In all, it was a fantastic deal, I thought. A fair price for this would have been $19.99, but Rib City is $4-5 less than that (depending on what night you go).
Good stuff, I would recommend this to friends looking for Barbecue in this area.
Next up I want to try Atwater's on the weekend! Will report back...
Editorial Review by Christina Thornell. Known for its backyard barbecue flavors, this casual restaurant boasts an open-pit grill and countless meat dishes topped with secret sauces.
Great Ribs and sauce. Great friendly service. Have been to Rib City twice now and have enjoyed the food very much, the service is great and the ribs are so tender and good. The beans are a very good side for your meal. The corn on the cob is also very good. Good selections on the the kids menu.
Great food. I love Rib City Grill. I live in Tampa and visit the location on Hillsborough Avenue at least once a week. The ribs are tender, with no fat. The Big City melt sandwich is so good, piled high with beef, that is not fatty at all and is so tender. They also have a great grouper sandwich. The beans are out of this world, Sweet with pieces of beef in them. The service is outstanding. I always enjoy my visits to rib city grill.
