bad management – I was there with my wife to celebrate her birthday. She was pretty drunk but not causing any kind of problems. Management had approached her and told her to stop dancing and sit down. I was in the restroom at the time and when I returned her and her friends told me what happened. We asked to speak with the manager and ask for a explanation why they said this to my wife. We were not rude but the manager was after a brief discussion they decided to throw us out. The police officers were called and did a sobriety test on me. I was ok to drive and they told me that they have more problems with this establishment. I told them what happened and they were agreeing with me that management is more or less a bunch of douchbags.
Place has gone down hill.... – Ive been going there for years. Then they start charging a cover, there is no club in 2 counties, that charges woman to get in. Now they also ID their regulars, and they all know me. Well I go their to dance, and laugh at the freaks, there is no way Im going to pay to do that and be treated crappy as a regular. Bye Bye New York New York!
CAUTION – I moved away from here 20 yrs ago. At that time NY NY was a hot spot. I recently moved back and was pleasantly surprised to see it still open. I went there Saturday night in anticipation of the fun to be had. I was very dismayed and let down to find that NY NY has deteriorated to nothing more than a place for middle age Black men to pick up Obese White women. Its glory days are long gone.
Some input – I guess I haven't been coming here as long as 'niteowl', but 25 years and counting ain't bad.
I have to agree with the comment on the "bootie" music, moderation is the key.
As for the septic problem, I have never seen that over the years. I'm not there all the time mind you, but have not witnessed it myself.
All in all, a fun place. Waaaay too few clubs for us 'older' folks in the Pinellas/Pasco area. [hint hint]
I assume ownership has considered (and dismissed?) opening a 2nd location? I'm sure it would be popular, as long as the same ambiance was maintained. I know I would go! Got a gentleman in mind that would pony up the $$$ too if interested.
Yep - it is old! – Okay there is only 1 reason to go to the Old NY NY - and that is to have a good drink and watch a bunch of old people dancing. This can be some pretty hysterical entertainment. The outfits worn by some will just crack you up. This seems to be where all the 50 something divorcees hang out. The location is good - but if I owned this place here is what I would do. GUT EVERYTHING INSIDE. The old tarnished brass rails - pleather bar stools, old wooden tables with napkins under the leg to level them etc... and all the other way out dated decor. The place reeks of smoke. Then make it a really nice nightclub - NO SMOKING - but with a smoking section outside for those that do. Then change the name to THE NEW - New York New York.
Very bad place to go – I went there around 3 weeks ago, rented a hotel room close by so I would not have to drive.
I was there with my friend and my daughter only 20 minutes when the manager John came up to my table and told me I had to put my shoes on, in a very, very rude tone. I told him my feet were hurting and I was just going to have them off for a few. He got very angry and I asked if I could put on my flip flops, he said yes but I had to wear the shoes out the bar, came back with the flip flops and when he saw them he grabbed me by my right hand, torn a chunk of meat out of my hand and said "You are out of here". When my friend went to ask what was going on he was thrown out and then my daughter.
I own a business and my customers always come first. I cannot believe a nightclub would do that to someone who was not even drinking. My friend and daughter were drinking but I was just sitting at the table after dancing one song because of my heels.
I highly suggest that if you want to be treated like a human being do not go to this place.
Best Disco In The USA! – I am from NY & have done Studio 54, Zenon, The Funhouse (remember that?) Elephus, The Arena, etc, etc, etc....& yes...I am in my mid gorgeous 40's...& let me tell you that NY NY rocks. If you are looking to party & dance like the old days...this is the place. You will have a blast. It does not get better . I live in LA & have a vacation home near NY NY & I when I am in town...I can't wait to dance & let loose on Friday night! Please NY NY...stay around forever!!
A long-timer's view of New York New York – New York New York is a tradition. A long-running night club - I used to go there years and years ago when it was Daddy's Money. The music is always good, the dance floor usually filled with people having fun. Certain nights are good for certain age groups - which makes it a fun place for EVERYONE - not just prowling 25 year olds. Monday night karaoke nights are slow - but have a family kind of atmosphere and the KJ has been there forever. Although she doesn't let people sing hard rock or rap - she still has a pretty good show. The bands later in the week always bring in crowds. The annual parties at NYNY are fun -- sometimes even with open bar!!!! All of the bartenders have been there long enough to remember your name AND your drink - and they pour a good one there!!
The kitchen is old - but puts out some really good food at decent prices. You can get a huge amount of food for two at a price you would pay for one anywhere else. Try the ribs - I did - and they're good. Also like that layer dip thing when I'm not looking for a complete dinner. I feel safe at New York New York - since they have bouncers and very responsive management when anyone gets out of line. I've seen problems stopped within seconds and people out the door before you even know what's happening. Also - since you must be over 21 - there are not alot of teeny-boppers hanging around the place. YEA!!
I read the posting about the bathrooms always being backed up -- that's a new one for me -- I've never seen it happen. So I think that is an exaggeration. Who knows. All in all - you can have a pretty good time at New York New York. Heck - I've met alot of people there that I can now call friends for many years. It needs a new look - yes - they tried with the new floors after taking up the carpet... but besides that, the rest is worth the trip.
aging Rico Sauveys Lolas – Meat markey is correct. I saw more beef on two feet then one would see on four. I now know what goes on in an ALF, too. It obvious the people who go there don't own mirrors. If you are desperate or are blind in one eye and can't see out of the other then this your place. I spent two hours there with a friend who dragged me there and begged him to get me out of there. I'm over fifty and felt young. I thought I was in a bad episode of twilight zone.
"WANNA BE" Heaven - Complete with SEPTIC Problems – I just don't get these reviews! Let me give you the REAL skinny on this club. Their secret to longevity, if not success, is that they pour a very stiff drink. That's it and nothing more. The bartenders and "staff" make no bones or apologies about it. They just keep the Clearwater police on speed dial and first name basis. Once inside it is an expected practice for patrons to jump straight into the "3D's theory" of thinking AND behavior; Dark (as in the lighting), Drunk (which all the women are when they're not busing getting sick right next to you or fist fighting in the parking lot), and Distance (after the first two just about anything looks good). There's a running joke that "NYNY is the best SOUTH St. Pete Club located in Clearwater." Every once in a while some "pretty people (nice, clean, educated)" walk in and they invariably turn right back out. Watch out for the septic back ups that happen without fail almost EVERY weekend. Mens and ladies rooms - and watch where you walk/step around the side and back of the building (for the same reasons just stated). If you don't like the house band that is still playing the very same music they played 25-years ago and think they sound good, then you can "bump and grind" to bootie music all night long - that's all they play on weekends. Posers and players and very few of them very clean or safe looking. If you catch a "pretty person" there for however briefly, be assured that person is slumming.
