Editorial Review for Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish – by Peter Behle
The Scene
A family-owned institution in the Pasadena area of St. Petersburg, Ted Peters has operated in nearly the same location for more than 50 years. It's a small place--with picnic tables set outside and a few tables inside, but it's almost always jammed with diners.
The Food
Order a dinner platter of smoked salmon (or mackerel or mullet) and it's easily enough for two to share--a full pound of fish, warm German potato salad (flavored with bacon and onion) and coleslaw. The lunch-sized portion has a smaller piece of fish and no side dishes. The fish wears its smoky taste like a crown, and the delicate meat inside stays moist and tender. The burgers here are terrific as well, plus the "grilled fish spread" sandwich is a lot tastier than it sounds--somewhat of a fancified grilled tuna. Order a draft beer and you get an iced mug so cold your hands become red from clutching it.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasBe sure to visit the next-door smokehouse. Smoked fish is, of course, available for sale--but it's fascinating to see the old-fashioned smoking method in action.

I read most of the reviews and was surprised to see so many negative comments after hearing good things about this place for years. Almost decided not to go.... but I did and was very pleased with my visit to Ted Peters. Most of the negative reviews had to do with poor service. My waitress was excellent... very attentive.. she made good recommendations and was very prompt... We had the smoked fish dip and true to the waitress advice it was great with hot sauce. Me and my wife split a smoked salmon dinner (cost $21) and it was more than we could eat.... at least a pound of incredibly fresh salmon... I noted some other complaints about price in some reviews..... I told my wife that good salmon costs about the same as this dish... All in all my service was prompt and attentive, the food was great, and the cost was reasonable.
Pros: Food quality, Service, Old Florida Charm

I've been going to Ted Peters for over 20 years, and I became use to the poor service and attitudes from the employees. It was kind of a joke to my friend and I over the years as to how long it would be until we got service at the small bar area out front. In the early 90's we would go there on a Sunday to eat and watch a little football on their 20" T.V. We would sit there for 15 to 20 minutes with no menu, drinks or food in front of us, most employees would ask us what the score was even though they could plainly see we had no drinks or menus. Even the manager would stand right by us talking about the game but never asked us if we needed anything. After a while of being ignored, I guess the wait staff realised we weren't going anywhere and would serve us. We looked at it as part of the "experiance" and just delt with it. That was when I was a single young guy with a whole day to waste. I hadn't been there since the late 90's and went back there last week; what a HUGE MISTAKE!!! The prices have gone way up while it seems the portions have gone down. The service is still horrible, I think their servers are ex-driver's licence office employees. My friend and I basically had to argue with the server to get extra napkins and a refill of our drinks, it's like they train the servers to be rude. The fish spread is still awesome and the salmon is really good but to expensive for what you get now. Anyhow, I wouldn't take anyone there again, I might go back sometime when I feel my ego needs to knocked down a notch or two, or when I want to be left alone.
