The Scene
A family-owned institution in the Pasadena area of St. Petersburg, Ted Peters has operated in nearly the same location for more than 50 years. It's a small place--with picnic tables set outside and a few tables inside, but it's almost always jammed with diners.
The Food
Order a dinner platter of smoked salmon (or mackerel or mullet) and it's easily enough for two to share--a full pound of fish, warm German potato salad (flavored with bacon and onion) and coleslaw. The lunch-sized portion has a smaller piece of fish and no side dishes. The fish wears its smoky taste like a crown, and the delicate meat inside stays moist and tender. The burgers here are terrific as well, plus the "grilled fish spread" sandwich is a lot tastier than it sounds--somewhat of a fancified grilled tuna. Order a draft beer and you get an iced mug so cold your hands become red from clutching it.

Ted Peter's is a St Pete institution and rightfully so. It has some of the best smoked fish around. The fish spread and even the burgers are also excellent. Try some good old fashioned root beer, too. The potato salad is German style and very tasty. Sometimes you might have to wait to get seated, but it is well worth it.

I have lived in this area for almost 30 yrs. I always remembered it being great. Not the case now. Prices for a burger were ridiculous and your charged for lettuce, toms, pickles and whatever else. No sides come with anything unless you want to pay at least $2.00 for potato salad. Three people with burgers with all the trimmings, no sides, fish spread, two sodas, one beer was equivalent to a night at Outback. I've had better fish spread, also. I think they let the fame of being on DDD go to their heads. We will not return.

The Extras:
Be sure to visit the next-door smokehouse. Smoked fish is, of course, available for sale--but it's fascinating to see the old-fashioned smoking method in action.
