The Scene
One thing that sets the Mahaffey apart from other major theaters in the area is its location--it's an easy walk from a variety of restaurants. After shows, several popular lounges, also within a few blocks, cater to the theater crowd.
There's a lot of lightweight popular fare on Mahaffey's season schedule, but the discriminating audience member can find some valuable nuggets. The most reliable offerings are the Florida Orchestra's Masterworks series concerts. American Stage, a fine regional theater company based in downtown St. Petersburg, occasionally produces its excellent family theater shows at the Mahaffey, and the theater often hosts fine popular music concerts. But the Mahaffey's Broadway offerings and big-ticket shows generally aren't up to the level of those at performing arts centers in Clearwater and Tampa.
