Overpriced, lousy food and service – I'm frustrated that I just paid 50 bucks to get food poisoning. The food was below average and the service was rushed and curt... bordering on rude. The fried clam strips were chewy and gritty, which I'm going to assume was sand. The blackened grouper was flavorless and undercooked, the fried shrimp tasted like they were straight out of the freezer section of the grocery store and worse yet when I looked under the breading they weren't de-veined. The steamed veggies somehow managed to be both limp and dehydrated, and all of the veggies including the potatoes were drenched in what appeared to be butter oil (or whatever that fake butter is that Long John Silvers uses). When the bill arrived it said that happy hour and early bird specials were from 3-6 daily, but we were not made aware of this when we arrived well before 6:00. We had not even made it half way home (10 minutes away) when I realized I was going to be violently ill. Not sure if it was from the bad seafood, the huge amounts of oil butter, or the tartar and cocktail sauces kept at room temperature on the tables. At any rate, I decided the leftovers were not even fit for my dogs to eat.
P.S. I was bewildered at all of the great reviews on this site until I saw that the most recent was in 2006. Obviously a lot has changed.
only the best of the best – I worked for the shrimp store back before the remodling faz,and I tell ya it has not changed a bit. Oh, wait it has gotten better then before. I now live in Brooksville, and at any chanse I get to St.Pete. I have to stop and eat some good food. There is only one problem,I can't get everything I like. But I try. I am proud to know that I worked for such a great place that serves great food. I reccomend anyone who has not tryed it to give it a shot. It is a happy and yummy expierence. Lynn Smith
A keeper – We have been going to 4th street for many years and the quality and service are great. Only have had a bad experience with one of hte waitresses, otherwise great service. We usually get the steamed shrimp and the quantity is awesome, that with the new potoatoes in butter and coleslaw will really hit the spot. The clam chowder is good, but not hte best I have had in the area.
great experience – We found this website and used the info. to make the decision to try the Fourth Street Shrimp Store.
We have lived in the area since 1979 and this was our first visit...it was great..we found that they have been in business 18 years. We eat out a lot so we were amazed we had not found this jewel before now. Very reasonably priced, great portions and quality food. The waitress was very nice and when I called for directions the girl was very pleasant and helpful. This place is a keeper.
The Fourth Street Shrimp Store is fun from the beginning. – The Scene
Inside hangs various goofy antiques, a Victorian bathtub lounges on the lawn and hung inside on the wall is a carved naked woman that once graced the prow of a shipshe is quixotically wearing a man's necktie and strings of Gasparilla beads. We were so chilled at that point, we didn't care whether the food was any good or notthe restaurant has all the earmarks of a terrific place to hang.
A clam chowder, rich and thick and loaded with clams and potatoes, arrived straightaway. It was very good, and people with delicate appetites probably would be satisfied to stop there and go home. But duty called, so we answered by ordering shrimp and scallop dinners.
Mine entailed a huge pile of fried scallops, accompanied with homemade coleslaw and new potatoes swimming in parsley and butter. It must have been a half pound or more or scallops, way too much to eat at a sitting, but who cares? Homemade rather than commercial breading might have made the dish better, but it was still perfectly respectable. Ditto for the shrimp dinner my hubbie got.
If you're genetically unable to decline anything chocolate, try the "Chocolate Suicide" cake, which lives up to its name: Dark, rich cake loaded with satiny frosting, its outside rolled with peanuts, a wonderful, crunchy variation. Suicide would only be attractive if you knew you would never taste this cake again.
Comfort (sea)food – This has quickly become my favorite place for cheap, satisfying, delicious seafood. The clam chowder is among the best ever. The clam strips and trender and full of flavor. The atmosphere is quirky, but the friendly service and no-nonsense food more than makes up for it.
