McWrights. When this place first opened up it was great! Now that they have expanded, and renovated they have become more like a McDonalds. The customer service has gone down along with the quality of their food. I had to send a sandwich back 3 times before they got it right...how hard is it for NO mayo?!?!? They are too busy trying to make money and pushing more and more people through their doors then taking care of the ones that have been with them for years. I got fed up with it and tried a little place my friend suggested called Mott and Hester which is located just across the street. Though it looks like a "hole in the wall" they offer far superior sandwiches, which are made right the first time! I would recommend giving them a try instead.
Mediocre Food but good desserts. This place is overall overrated. The only thing they offer of any value is their desserts; but be prepared to pay a lot for them! Recommend trying Mott & Hester located across the street.
Best cakes anywhere!. At my current job this is THE only place to get cakes (we get them for birthdays, other celebrations, etc). There is rarely a crumb left when my coworkers know that a Wright's cake is in the house. The red velvet, alpine, hummingbird and peanut butter/chocolate cakes round out my favorites. It's always moist and super sweet. One thing we often forget is the milk! I'm sure there's nothing low-cal about these cakes but they are worth the indulgence.
You MUST eat there.. Stopped in for lunch, they had quite reasonable prices and everything looked tasty. I couldn't figure out what to get so my wife and I split a "Beef Martini" sandwich and a bowl of corn chowder soup. WOW. Best lunch i've ever had in tampa, best sandwich i've ever had in florida, possibly anywere. The staff are really friendly and funny, and the service was excellent. They have a new customer for life!
Grandoise. Everything in oversized portions, comfy and friendly with a history. A lovely interior and a nice outside porch. While I love the variety of choices, I'm actually disappointed with the desserts, just like at many other restaurants. They may be dense, but they're pretty flavorless.
Longtime Tampa institution has kept its edge throughout the decades..
The Scene
Casual, with a cafeteria-style line that winds its way to a simple (but always packed) little dining room. The menu offers a great selection of sandwiches, excellent soups and huge, crisp salads with homemade dressings.
The Food
Wright's does it all well, but its desserts really distinguish it from the pack. Offerings include rich chocolate cake, so heavy with flavor it's almost black; great apricot bars crunchy with a real butter crust; and gooey, crumbly brownies so tender they fall apart at the first bite. Everything can be packaged to go if you're in a hurry. More good bets: any kind of soup and the Greek salads.
