The largest grassroots record store in the area perseveres amid the big chains, thanks to a superb selection..
Lay of the Land
Tucked away in one of Dale Mabry's many strip malls, it's a surprisingly expansive store with row upon row of new and used CDs, including a bargain bin. Locals have watched Vinyl Fever evolve from a cramped little store with a specialized selection into the largest independent store in the area. What makes Vinyl Fever exciting is a healthy mix of popular and obscure styles, and a great variety of almost anything. They have a decent selection of rock, rap, punk, and almost anything else you can think of, including some near-impossible-to-find discs.
Pay the Piper
New CDs can be pretty pricey--ranging up to $16 or so. But before you shell out the big bucks for a shiny, new disc, scour the used section, which will most likely have what you're looking for. Just gotta have that brand-new-just-hit-the-shelves CD and can't wait a week or two to see if it shows up in the used section? Better to buy it here than a chain--at least at Vinyl Fever you're supporting the independents.
