The Scene – This half outdoor bandshell, half screened-in restaurant is the area's bastion of jam and edgy roots rock. It's definitely the only sand-floor concert venue where you can pop inside and get a half-dozen oysters between sets. – – The Draw – Dig into Skipper's hush puppies, conch fritters, gator tail or jerked chicken with your choice of sides. More Southern-inspired delicacies on the menu: oysters, beer-boiled shrimp and blackened fish. For music, catch everything from touring road dogs like Southern Culture on the Skids, Trout Fishing in America, and the…
Editor's Tips
- The Extras:
- Go home with some of Skipper's signature Captain Tom's Scotch Bonnet Pepper Sauce.
- Know Before You Go:
- Be sure you're ready to go home early--Skipper's has a midnight noise curfew thanks to county ordinances.
Great Food Great bands Great times

Skippers is a long lasting legend for good reasons. The food is fantastic, good service, great bands and a great mixed crowd always.
Curtis needs to catch up
by Borisenko at Citysearch
Skippers is every good thing that has been said by the other reviewers. But the main review by Curtis keeps talking about a sand dance floor. Man, if you think Skippers still has a sand dance floor, you have not been there in a long time. The only exposed dirt left is between the tables and the rest of the place has had a deck for as long as any regular can remember.
- Pros: Overall good vibe
- Cons: Weather can be discouraging, although they continue to improve conditions
Outstanding. Period.

Good service, GREAT food. Try the smoked mullet-hands down the best in Tampa Bay. It is a dry rub that, though it is a smoked fish, it is suprisingly moist, with a full flavor. It is served with a side of BBQ sauce that reminded us of the Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse NY (a national Landmark). Back tothe fish-The meat literally falls off the bone, and one fish with the two sides is a great meal. And a quick word about the hush-puppies-they melt in your mouth. Literally. Even the Ceasars salad was phenomenal. It was a perfect balance of greens and chicken, that left our salad expert speechless (and she has been with us for 11 years-I have never seen her rave about a salad like she did here. In 11 years.) On a Saturday night, the service was fast, food was hot and wait staff was very friendly. Of course, this isnt a "five star restauraunt", but for a place you can walk in with shorts and flip-flops, it deserves at least four stars.
- Pros: Great food, Great service, Great price
- Cons: No A/C indoors
Great place for a fun casual night
by mfrayn at Citysearch
Go for the music, not the food. For first timers this place looks like it should be condemned. You can dress as casual as you want and no one will notice. They have very unusual bands that are always a lot of fun. I would highly recommend eating somewhere else before you get there. Just about everything is battered and deep fried. Heart attack in a paper tray. The onion rings are still good.
- Pros: Fun, fun, fun
- Cons: food, food, food
Unscrupulous bartender

Great place to hang out as long as you don't mind being shortchanged by the smarta$$ bartender outside. Gave him a twenty and he gave me change for a ten, looked at me funny when I called him out.
