Tips for Mad Dogs & Englishmen

August 02, 2007

Classy and a bit pricey, Mad Dogs and Englishmen stays within its theme.. The Scene
Don't get too riled up by the name: Mad Dogs and Englishmen's bark is worse than its bite. Catering to upscale South Tampa clientele, Mad Dogs softens the edges of its English theme while holding true to the essentials like Guinness, Harp and great grub.

The Food
The creative menu is pasta-heavy, but the feta in phyllo pastry appetizer is an absolute indulgence. Bring a heavy wallet, because you can and will find inflated SoHo prices this far inland. Just classy enough to still be casual, your date will love the indoor intimacy and overpriced wine.

The Warning
On the flip side, Mad Dogs' outdoor, umbrella-shaded tables allow full fresh-air immersion and make a perfect place for the crew to meet for post-dinner pints. Be patient, grasshopper: The English aren't known for speediness and neither is the service. Parking is also a chore, since the back lot fills quickly and adjoining lots are difficult to maneuver into.

Great food. My buddy and I went there for lunch and sat out in the patio to enjoy the great weather. Good beer selection, but what really got me was the food. I got a steak sandwich and my buddy got the ahi tuna sandwich. They were both phenomenal. The steak was so tender that it literally melted. The spicy fries were a nice touch too. I can't believe it took me so long to check this place out. My buddy told me dinner is great here too.

Great local pub. Love the vibe here. It's authentic without being kitchy. They have great beers, great love music and a very diverse menu. The fish and chips and hummus are both great. The new chef is really working hard, the immaculate kitchen is a great sign. Patrons are friendly and jovial, just like Hugo, the patron saint of the bar. Ask him about the theatre and watch his eyes light up.

Love this place!. If you're looking for good food, a relaxed and intimate atmosphere and great people this is the place ~ Hugo, the bartender and magician extraordinaire, is funny and pours a mean glass of wine/ale. Love the new chef (and the chopped salad is to die for). Live music, especially on Saturday nights, is great. I don't find parking to be a problem. Always feel comfortable here, even if I come by myself.

Great local scene. love the outside patio, and of course the new decor! Been going there for about 15 years, and enjoy the people (employees & patrons) Great little outside bar for the smokers! Love the Mad Dog Pizza and the Stella! I personally never have had issues with parking, as the back lot is small, there is plenty parking in all areas around.
