Editorial Review for Green Iguana Bar and Grill – by Curtis Hayes, Eric Vician

The Scene
Around for more than a decade, the Green Iguana works hard as a restaurant by day, a bar by night. Grab a burger and a sidewalk table during daylight hours. When the sun sets, the music starts and the crowds coverge on the club inside. As with almost all Ybor bars, the singles are out to tout. Not as much of a meat market as some of its brethren on the strip, but still the scantily-clad should beware.

The Food

All the heavenly choices for the 8-ounces of ground chuck come on freshly baked sourdough buns. Some of the tastiest burger choices include the Cheesiest (American, cheddar and monterey jack), Stank (blue cheese) and Fungus Humongous (portabello mushroom and feta cheese). There's also plenty of fresh seafood, wraps, pizzas and salads available.

Wednesdays & Weekends

Don't be shocked to see a line on Wednesday (dollar drinks), Friday and Saturday nights. The long but narrow bar means space is at a premium.

The bouncers at this club are overzealous $8/hour roided up idiots. After having a quick dinner with my family (and not drinking), I left with my iced tea in my hand. The bouncer told me that I couldnt leave with my drink (in a plastic to-go cup). I informed him that it was iced tea and I wouldn't be throwing it away. The bouncer then actually crushed it in my hand and got tea all over my jeans.... This is the behavior of a 5 year old, not somone that is paid to protect patrons. These idiots are so roided up that they can't think clearly. I will not be visiting this establishment again under any circumstance and I advise you to do the same.

Pros: Decent place to grab a quick lunch - waitresses are usually very fake and service is poor

Cons: The bouncers are absolute idiots...don't go after 9:00 to avoid these power hungry roid heads

I had read some reviews, and while on vacation, coerced two of my friends to go with me to the Green Iguana for dinner one evening. We were seated at a small table with high chairs, which was OK after we got used to it. However, we were cramped near a little wall right next to a Ms. PacMan arcade and a pool table. Sort of uncomfortable and annoying. Also, we were close to the bar which had a LOT of rowdy singles getting their drink on. Anyway, the people watching was good, and the food was excellent and fairly priced. I had mahi with coconut rice and veggies....FANTASTIC! The mahi was sweet - I had never had it before, so I was very pleased. One of my friends had a portobello burger, which he enjoyed and looked rather tasty, and my other friend had a regular burger which she said was also good. We had crab rangoons as appetizers. The rangoons themselves were good, but the dipping sauce was very different from typical sauce that would be used - it had a spicy aftertaste that I didn't so much care for. We had to ask for refills. The live band was playing covers of everything from DMB to Matchbox 20, which I liked....but the "unplugged" versions got a little old after a while (I wish the BAND actually started playing with the lead singer...it was mostly him and his guitar). Overall, the Green Iguana had great food and good music, but if you aren't looking to pick up other singles at the bar, probably go during the day for lunch!

Pros: Food, price

Cons: So loud you can't hear others talk

Like a chameleon, the Iguana changes from burger-eating lunchery to beer-guzzling dancery.  See the full editorial review.
