Tips for Mauricio Faedo's Bakery

August 09, 2012

As a resident of Tampa for 30 + years, I can say that this is the best Cuban bread in Tampa! (We have tried them all.) Their little devil crabs and stuffed potatoes are excellent too. Staff has always been friendly. Thanks for keeping it "old" world.

Bait and Switch. Mauricio's sells fresh made bread as well as bread from the Casino's bakery so be careful. You can get a loaf in a paper or plastic bag but if you request plastic make sure the bag does not say Casino.Casino bread is fine bread but you are there for the freshest bread made on site. One can tell the difference between the loaves,Casino is more uniform while Maurico's has bulbous ends. This is not Mauricio's bread in a Casino bag because there are other ways to tell like color and softness.I was shocked to glance at the bag half way home and see the Casino name.

A loaf at Maricio's is $2 now and a sandwich made with fried cod from High Tide nearby is great. There is a post office next door which is good since no sane person leaves a check in a mailbox in Tampa.Cuban bread has increased in price lately so get the most for your money and buy fresh.Cuban sandwiches are pressed in a special appliance and a sandwich shop without one is a red flag.Tampa Cubans talk about the old neighborhood from gated communities and go back during the day for bread.

Historic and charming. I love having this bakery in my neighborhood. I missed living in a place where you could just walk down the street to get bread for dinner until I found Mauricio's. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the hard working team of bakers laying out the dough for the cuban bread that is the hallmark of this bakery. Unfortuantely for me I've never really fancied cuban bread, so i find the result of all this labor to be mediocre tasting bread. Additionally, the lady behind the counter has never been all that friendly.
