Editorial Review for Babe's Pizza – by Eric Vician
The Scene
Owned and operated by the same family that has lived upstairs for years, the first floor eatery is popular yet quaint. It's as much of a landmark as you're going to find in Brandon. It boasts a tiny bar, limited booth seating and the best pizza aroma you've ever inhaled. While you wait for your pie, watch the toy train circumnavigate the ceiling perimeter.
The Food
For first-timers and return customers alike, the plan is the same. No need for a menu here. The agenda is simple: Order the signature double-decker (a fully stuffed pizza within a pizza), sit down with a pitcher of beer and enjoy.

Insider Tips
Avoid Friday NightsThat's when the place really gets rocking and the wait can easily exceed an hour.
Take a Pie HomeWhile dining in is the preferred choice here, don't be afraid to place a take out order if you're in a hurry.

I wonder if this place has changed its product recently, because it's hard to understand why it gets such a high rating. I expected good things - the building was unique, the smells inside were good, it had all the earmarks of a local quality pizza joint. Until the pizza arrived, that is. Cheese covered barely half of the pizza spreading out from the center, and it was a thin layer. The most amateurish of mistakes - too much sauce - dripped from the sides and caused the toppings to slide completely off if you weren't careful. Laughably skimpy on the meat toppings (although I could see plenty of green peppers) My double-decker consisted of another layer of soggy dough, lots more sauce, and almost non-existent toppings -including no second layer of cheese at all (!) Very nice staff, and the owner came around to each table. I wanted to like it, but to be honest the pizza was just BAD. Oh yea, no free refills either.
Pros: Friendly Service
Cons: Food

As an expert of Chicago and New York pizza, I searched online for a west Tampa pizzeria that was similiar and found Babe's pizza...which comes highly rated with locals. To begin with....the staff is fantatstic....super friendly (yet busy), and helpful. The restaurant itself is barely big enough to seat 30...although that makes it quaint...you can watch the cooks prepare your pizza...which is reassuring...be ready to wait....this place is in demand... In regards to da pizza: I has had some of the best pizzas in the world (accent intended), so I is VERY snobbish when it comes to passing a grade.....I will say...that as far as a Tampa pizza goes, the double decker here is by far the best I have tried (I have not tried the thin crust here yet)....however...as a Chicago/NY pizza snob, I have to mention that they have a little to do.... The cheese is obviously ALL mozz......it is bland....although served in very generous portions.....and the sauce....well....I prefer a much more spicier puree....but it is a very good mix for a FL pizzeria. You wanna match Chicago/NY ? Add some toping spices (a little more oregano and sage) to your cheese and for sauce (cumin, parsley, bay and fennel).....wanna get more NY ? ADD some frigging provalone to da cheese, and roll the crust a bit crispier..... Overall...excellent for FL and double decker.....and you definitely get your money's worth.....a $20 pizza will serve 4 or 5 easy....
Pros: Pizza, neighborhood service, value
Cons: Seating, wait time
