Overview
First named Las Tortugas ("The Turtles") by Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon, the collection of seven coral reefs and shoals was soon renamed Dry Tortugas by mariners, noting its lack of fresh water. There's plenty of salt water, though. Ninety-nine percent of the park's 65,000 acres is open water or submerged island. Most of the park is open year-round for day use only and can be accessed by boat or seaplane.
The Experience
The park's miles of fragile coral reefs are home to an amazing variety of tropical fish and other marine life. Diving, snorkeling and underwater photography are among the chief activities. You can also fish, swim, hike, bird-watch and take ranger-guided tours. Camping is allowed on Garden Key, though the lack of amenities (like fresh water) may discourage all but hard-core outdoorsy types.

The trip to the Dry Tortugas was the highlight of my vacation. Crystal blue waters, white beaches, access to living coral and extraordinary sealife. During my snorkel adventrure, I saw many species of fish, an eagle ray, beautiful coral, dolphins and even a baracuda and shark- not to worry. Both were harmless. This was the first time I was snorkeling, and I can't imaging it being better. The Yankee Freedom II staff was extraordinary was well. Definate must! (remeber- no running water on island).
Pros: great snorkeling, great tour, amazing wildlife
Cons: not 4 children, expensive

In-laws live in the keys. Have been many times but first time to Dry Tortugas. We are going back and staying the whole day. The seaplane is the way to go. If you take the first plane you are the only ones there and there is tons to do. Bird watching, touring the fort, walking the grounds and snorkling. Wish we had our own boat and could scuba dive the area must be beautiful diving. If you can't do the plane take a boat but go because it is something to see. Clean, natural and quiet.
