Editorial Review for Centro Ybor – by Eric Vician

The Scene
This $45 million, 210,000-square-foot entertainment and shopping complex (opened Oct. 5, 2000) occupies most of the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Seventh Avenue and sprawls back through Eighth. It also includes a $5 million renovation to the historic Centro Espanol social club built in 1912.

The Goods
The anchors of fun are GameWorks, a second-story Muvico 20 Theater (with a 21-and-over bistro) and an Improv Comedy Club. Patrons shop at Camelot Music, American Eagle Outfitters, Urban Outfitters, Victoria's Secret, Pacific Sunwear, Afterthoughts, Eyetems, GBX Shoes, Bodyknit Streetwear, Silver Edge, Metropolitan Deluxe and more. Food options include Mezzanote Italian Restaurant, Max's Shakes & Burgers, Starbucks, Big City Tavern, Adobe Gila's, Ybor Station Alehouse and Lazy Flamingo.

Centro Ybor was the city of Tampa's attempt at capitalizing on the historic Ybor city district. A capitalistic disaster, it was paid for in part by taxpayers and then sold off to an investor in Chicago. In any case, it offers several stores, like the trendy Urban Outfitters and the brewery / restaurant the Ybor City Brew co. and the very interesting IMPROV comedy club. These few shining stars of the plaza do little to offset the dearth of the whole, as many businesses find it very hard to stay open here. Whether it is an improvement on the former status of the area still remains to be seen. It offers fun for the whole family as long as the sun is up, after which you would be wise to leave the kids at home. This is still Ybor city after all.

Pros: A face lift to a historic area. A couple of shops and restauraunts not found anywhere else.

Cons: Bad parking, not safe for kids at later hours, no longer owned by city of Tampa.
